Mary Thornhill’s seventh goal of the Chilton County High School campaign for the varsity girls was the highlight of the week’s action on the pitch for the Tigers. Thornhill converted her seventh goal off an assist from Charleigh Hicks, her third assist of the season, but CCHS fell 11-1 to Benjamin Russell High School on April 1 in Class 6A Area 5 play.
The varsity boys also suffered defeat the same night to Benjamin Russell in the friendly confines of Tiger Stadium, 5-0. An evenly matched first half saw the visitors grab a lead just before the halftime break, but the mood was still positive for CCHS in the locker room. However, a penalty kick was awarded and converted by Benjamin Russell shortly into the second half and deflated all of the Tigers’ momentum the rest of the game.
The losses dropped both varsity teams to 0-3 in area play this season and eliminated them from playoff contention.
“I love this team and this senior class, and I really hate that we missed out on the postseason,” Brandon Gurganus, CCHS varsity boys head coach, said. “Hopefully, we can finish out the season strong and send them off with a winning record.”
Gurganus said the last handful of games this season for CCHS will be about balancing preparations for next year with trying to send the senior class out with a winning record, currently sitting at 6-7-1 overall.
CCHS hosts Calera High School on April 4 for its final area game of the season, and senior night is scheduled for April 10 when the Tigers host Elmore County High School. Seniors from both varsity teams will be recognized at 5 p.m, and the varsity girls kick off the evening at 5;30 p.m.
CCHS soccer is also hosting all of the soccer players from the YMCA of Chilton County’s AYSO soccer league for its final two home matches of the season. YMCA soccer players will get free admission and popcorn by wearing their jersey to Tiger Stadium.
