Maplesville High School’s Mollie Kayte Smith is this week’s athlete of the week after her performances during the week of March 28-April 3.

There were no April Fools jokes about Smith’s game on April 1 against Isabella High School, and it started in her first at bat. After the first three Maplesville batters reached base safely, Smith stepped up with the bases loaded and launched a grand slam over the outfield wall to put the Red Devils on top 4-0 before an out was recorded.

Smith got back to the plate in the second inning with the bases loaded again. This time the ball stayed in the park, but a bases-clearing double added three more RBIs to her total bringing it to seven through less than two innings. Smith put the finishing touches on her perfect performance with another double, this one going for a modest two RBIs. Smith’s final stat line was an astounding 3-for-3 with a grand slam, two doubles and nine RBIs.

Maplesville took down Breakthrough Charter School 15-0 in both games of their doubleheader on April 3. Smith got the start in game one and threw three innings surrendering no hits and striking out nine batters. She added a double in game two of the doubleheader.
