It was a working process of a week for Chilton County High School’s soccer programs as the Tigers worked their way through the action from Feb. 28-March 6.

The varsity boys team started its week dropping the March 3 match to Stanhope Elmore High School 3-0. The varsity girls game against Stanhope Elmore was rescheduled for March 20 along with the junior varsity boys game. The Tigers were looking to get back on track on March 5 as they took Sylacauga High School to halftime tied 0-0. Coming out of the break, CCHS got a goal from Vanni Hernandez on a picture-perfect free kick. However, Sylacauga bagged two goals in the second half to take the win 2-1.

The varsity girls’ action started on March 5 facing Sylacauga where Charleigh Hicks scored off a set piece for CCHS on a corner kick. But Sylacauga would net three goals to take the 3-1 win. The varsity girls also had a one-off game against Gardendale High School on March 6 and fell 6-0.

The varsity teams will now turn their attention to their first Class 6A Area 5 matchups of the year on March 11 traveling to Benjamin Russell High School. The varsity girls will kick off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity boys afterwards.

“Tuesday is an opportunity to reset the season,” Brandon Gurganus, CCHS varsity boys head coach, said. “Ultimately, these are the games that matter. A couple of wins and all of a sudden there is new life in the season for our varsity teams.”

Both teams host Prattville Christian Academy on March 13 out of area play as well.

The junior varsity boys squad won two of its three games at the Sylacauga JV Tournament last weekend, starting with a 5-2 win over Wetumpka High School. The Tigers dropped a hard-fought match 1-0 to Briarwood Christian School, but finished the tournament beating Springville High School in a penalty kick shootout.

“This JV team is fun to coach,” Gurganus said. “We have got a really talented group of freshmen that play really hard.”

Aside from the varsity games on March 11 and 13, CCHS will play its first freshman team match on March 10 as it hosts Thompson High School.
