The Chilton County High School varsity girls soccer team claimed their first win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Montevallo High School on Feb. 27 to highlight the school’s soccer action from Feb. 22-27.
The week started with a 10-0 setback to Helena High School on Feb. 25, but the form quickly improved for the varsity girls against Montevallo. The hosts jumped ahead early with a quick goal to put CCHS down 1-0, but Mary Thornhill was able to earn a penalty kick later in the first half. She stepped to the spot and finished it to tie the game just before halftime.
It was a cagey affair in the second half, but Thornhill found glory again as her 20-yard shot from the right wing found the back of the net to break the stalemate and establish a 2-1 lead for the Tigers. Junior goalkeeper Tenna To was able to make numerous saves to hold Montevallo to the early goal, and Thornhill’s brace was enough to earn the win.
The CCHS varsity boys soccer team entered the week’s play unbeaten, but ended the week with its first two losses of the season. The Tigers were downed 6-1 by Helena with Jesus Centeno as that only goal scorer. CCHS could not follow up the girls win against Montevallo and fell 4-1 with Jose Salgado getting on the scoresheet.
“Ultimately, we are just making too many mistakes to beat good teams,” Brandon Gurganus, CCHS varsity boys head coach, said. “In 20-25-minute spurts, we play well enough to compete with anyone in the state, then we will momentarily lose focus and intensity, and good teams will make you pay.”
The schedule does not do the CCHS varsity boys any favors as they host top-10 ranked Stanhope Elmore High School on March 3, followed by a trip to Sylacauga High School on March 5. The varsity girls will play both nights against Stanhope Elmore and Sylacauga as well. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. for the varsity girls with the varsity boys to follow at 7 p.m.
The CCHS junior varsity boys team will compete in the Sylacauga JV Tournament from March 1-2 and face Briarwood, Springville and Wetumpka High Schools during it.
