Thorsby blanks teams, wins central regional tournament

Thorsby High School walked through the AHSAA Class 2A Central Regional Softball Tournament at Lagoon Park in Montgomery without surrendering a run. The Rebels outscored its opponents 22-0 over three games to lock themselves into the AHSAA Class 2A State Softball Tournament at Choccolocco Park in Oxford from May 16-17.

Makinley Turner was stellar in the circle in all three games piling up 45 strikeouts. Thorsby began its regional tournament with a 9-0 win over Sulligent High School on May 9. Turner’s best game came against Sulligent, striking out 19 hitters in seven innings. She contributed a triple and four RBIs at the plate, and Summer Powell was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

The win advanced Thorsby to game two on May 9 against Horseshoe Bend High School which the Rebels took 7-0. Turner was perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, triple and six RBIs. Braelyn Whitfield had the other RBI for Thorsby.

The Rebels managed Lamar County High School on May 10, 6-0, to advance to the state tournament. Up 2-0 in the sixth inning, Thorsby pushed across four more runs to put the game out of reach. Brinley Giambrone was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Brooklyn Reeser was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Turner struck out 13 Lamar County hitters in the circle.

Isabella High School was also in the central regional tournament and opened its journey on May 9 with a 13-3 loss to Lamar County. Kelsey Cox was 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot in the lineup, and Auburn Bassett and Aliyah Patterson each had a triple and an RBI.

The Mustangs kept their tournament alive by defeating Reeltown High School 10-9 later in the day. Isabella forced extra innings with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Eliza Lovett’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Mustangs the win. Lovett was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Cox and Patterson each had two hits and an RBI.

Isabella’s tournament came to an end on May 10 falling to Horseshoe Bend 15-3. Cox and Bassett each had two hits and an RBI.
