Chilton County area high schools were well represented at the 2023 AHSAA State Track & Field Championship Meets in Cullman and Gulf Shores from May 4-6. Chilton County High School sent its state athletes to the Class 4A-7A meet in Gulf Shores, while Maplesville, Isabella and Billingsley high schools were at the Class 1A-3A meet in Cullman.

Area schools produced three, and almost four, top-five finishers at the state meets. Jimmie Sosa picked up a bronze medal for Isabella in the Class 2A boys javelin throw. Sosa finished 10th in the event at last year’s state meet and improved his best throw by 21 inches from 127 feet in 2022 to 148 feet this year. Isabella picked up top-10 finishes from DeAsia Wilson and Kaedon Abbott in the girls high jump and boys discus throw, respectively.

Dalton Carter was on the cusp of capturing two top-five finishes in separate hurdles events for Maplesville after crossing the line second in the Class 1A boys 110-meter hurdles. However, Carter was disqualified for stepping outside his lane. He did pick up a fourth-place finish in the boys 300-meter hurdles.

Billingsley’s Caydin Hornady was the top finisher in any event for the Bears with a fourth-place finish in the Class 1A girls javelin throw.
