From Raleigh’s Place

Raleigh’s Place is preparing for its 12th year of summer camp program at Camp 1:27. Camp 1:27 is intended to serve children in foster care or relative placement as well as children who have been adopted. There are two main goals for Camp 1:27: to introduce every camper to Christ, and to give every camper the best week of their life. These goals are accomplished by packing every minute of the camp week with fun activities like Gaga Ball, archery, arts and crafts, disc golf, team games, swimming, kayaking, going through the low ropes course, hiking, and so much more. There are also times dedicated to Bible study with chapels every night and devotions throughout the day.

As preparations continue, there are some major needs for this summer. The biggest need is to fill open staff positions. Camp 1:27 needs to hire more camp counselors, a camp cook, and an activities director. Camp Counselors hold arguably the most important role of any of our summer staff. They serve as the primary caregivers to their campers. Responsibilities include leading devotions, getting to know and loving on their campers, and facilitating games and activities. We are looking for college aged, young men and women to commit 5 weeks this summer to live as a summer missionary by ministering to our foster children.

The camp cook has a big job! This individual is responsible for preparing 3 meals a day each day of camp as well as maintaining the kitchen. We are looking for someone who is able to commit six weeks this summer for this position. The Camp Cook will have a team of Junior Counselors to assist in preparing and serving each meal.

An activities director is responsible for making, planning, and executing the camp schedule. This person will make sure campers and staff are having fun and staying safe. The activities director will also oversee a team of Junior Counselors who will help with all games and activities. Each of these staff positions is a paid position!

For those that are unable to serve on staff, there are other ways to help. A Work Day has been scheduled for May 13 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. This work day will focus on getting the grounds and facilities ready for campers. A couple of specific projects for this day include cleaning out the camp fire pit, building a new archery range, and building a lean-to for the camp tractor. Lunch will be provided for volunteers.

Another way to help is by sponsoring campers. Camp is free for our campers but it is not free for us. We depend on faithful supporters to sponsor a child so we can continue to offer Camp 1:27 free of charge. Sponsoring a camper is $100. This amount helps cover their food, lodging, and activities for the week they attend. This would be a great way to involve your family, friends, small groups, churches, or businesses.
