County engineer Heath Sexton gave an update on the Gravel Road Improvement Project at the Chilton County Commission meeting on April 25. Sexton said the road department has divided Chilton County into four different sections for the motor graters to work. Soil samples have also been taken from the roads to see what types of surface is best for that road.

The commission approved the purchase of a smooth wheel vibratory roller in the consent agenda. The vibratory smooth roller will help compact the roads to give them better drainage after storms, and hopefully decrease the amount of mud.

“We are continuing to try to proceed to improve our gravel roads this summer,” Sexton said.

Also, during the meeting, the commission:

  • Closed nominations for the Chilton Water Authority, and approved reappointing Harry Benson.
  • Closed nominations for the Airport Authority and approved reappointing Troy Rutherford and Jeff Mims.
  • Approved hiring Robert Peavy Black at the sheriff’s office, and Kelly Melton and Dakota Wise at the collections office.
