The Clanton City Council unanimously approved lowering the speed limit to 30 mph on Logan Road during its voting session on April 24.

The first reading of the ordinance for this change was read at the April 10 council meeting.

Signage on the road will be updated accordingly. Speed limit signs on Airport Road have also been updated because one portion of the road had the incorrect number on the signs.

Amendments to the fiscal year 2023 budget were also approved. The amendment accounted for $643,000 in unanticipated revenue and changes within department line items that needed to be made. Property and funding that had been in the City of Clanton Industrial Development Board was also approved to be moved to the city’s general fund. In a work session on April 21, Mims said doing this will allow the city to use the resources to develop opportunities for retail recruitment.

Also during the meeting, the council approved an updated contract with Cara Stallman of Grant Management. Under the new contract, the rate paid will be $2,200 per month for grant writing services. The city recently received a $24,000 grant to purchase license plate readers and is pursuing additional funding for recreation, water and sewer projects.

The city of Clanton is also considering setting an annual business license fee of $2,500 for fortune tellers and palm readers. Currently, a per session business license fee is in place for those that were in operation before the current moratorium was approved. New businesses of this type are still prohibited in Clanton. An ordinance was read at the April 24 meeting, and a vote is expected at a later date.

Mims also announced the city will hold a town hall meeting on May 4 from 5:30-7 p.m. In this public forum meeting, the community will have the opportunity to ask the mayor and council members questions.
