In recognition of the 55th anniversary of the national Fair Housing Act, Clanton Mayor Jeff Mims and the Clanton City Council declared April to be Fair Housing Month during a meeting on April 10. The Fair Housing Act made it illegal to discriminate based on someone’s race, color, the country they are from, religion, sex, familial status or disability when giving housing opportunities. Fair Housing Month is meant to promote equal housing opportunities. Amanda Creel, Birmingham Association of Realtors chief executive officer, said the goal is to have 55 governments make similar proclamations.

“Everyone deserves to have an adequate place to call home,” Creel said.

The council also approved contracting with Dr. William C. Ferguson to provide medical director services for the Clanton Fire Department. Fire Chief David Driver said the medical director signs off on the ambulance license, the storing of medical drugs and training. Only certain doctors qualify to be a fire department’s medical director.

“In order to have an … Advanced Life Support license, you have to have a medical director who kind of oversees,” Driver said.

The medical director also provides feedback and advice based on call reports.

Also during the meeting, the council accepted the audit and financial statements for the FY 2022 from Hull & Russell. Janice Hull of Hull & Russell said there were zero findings in the audit, and the internal controls in place by the city are working well.

An ordinance change to make the speed limit on Logan Road from Highway 31 to Enterprise Road 30 mph was read. This would lower it from the current speed limit of 45 mph. A vote on the ordinance change is expected at a future meeting.
