The Thorsby City Council unanimously approved a special use permit for The Bearded Peach in Clanton to sell alcoholic drinks at the 2023 Strawberry Festival on April 29. The permit allows The Bearded Peach to offer alcoholic drinks which will be strawberry themed such as strawberry daiquiris, in a roped off area.

The council approved a motion to offer the building at 12 Minnesota Avenue to a prospective buyer for an appraised price of $120,000. The council had been looking into selling the building after choosing to move its city hall to the old Regions Bank building on Highway 31. The building includes the annex and the Thorsby Dental Clinic. Members of the council agreed that selling the building to bring a new business into town would benefit the citizens more than keeping the building after the new city hall opens. The motion was passed unanimously.

Thorsby Fire Department brought a set of the new fire gear that the council approved for purchase about six months ago that came in this week. The set includes a new helmet, gloves, jackets, pants and boots. The department was able to purchase 15 sets, enough for every active member of the department. The shelf-life of the equipment is 10 years, and Fire Chief Josh Parker said the department will start getting a few new sets every year to avoid all of the equipment expiring all at once 10 years down the road.

Also, during the meeting, the council:

  • Approved an estimate for new windows at the concession stand at Sam Bentley Park, and four security cameras for the park as well.
  • Approved to purchase rubber mulch and borders to redo the playground at Richard Wood Park. The rubber mulch will be put around the equipment and replace the dirt or sand that is there now.
