It was a light workload for area Chilton County high school baseball teams during the week of March 28-April 3. Some teams embraced the spring break week and did not play, gearing up for the late season push coming up. Isabella and Maplesville high schools each had zero games this week after the Mustang’s April 3 matchup with Thorsby was rained out. Verbena High School’s doubleheader with Loachapoka High School was rained out on April 3 as well.

 

Chilton County High School

The Tigers finished up their games at the 2023 Gulf Coast Classic tournament at Robertsdale High School on March 28 and 29. CCHS took on Normal Community High School (Illinois) on March 28 and narrowly missed out on the win falling 9-8. After trailing 7-1 after just two innings, the Tigers fought back and tied the game at eight apiece in the seventh inning.

Cannon Miller led the way for 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Eli Dale and Tre Fulmer each recorded two hits, and J.D. Terrell had two RBIs. Aiden Bee got through an inning for CCHS, but Cohen Ellison and Brayden Mims combined for six innings, three hits, two runs and five strikeouts the rest of the game to calm things down.

In the end, Normal Community walked off the Tigers with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

CCHS ended its tournament with a 9-4 win over St. Clair County High School on March 29. Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first inning, the Tigers stormed back in front with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, punctuated by a Miller two-RBI double. CCHS scored six runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Miller was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Coy Crumpton had two RBIs. Terrell was stellar on the mound going six innings and giving up four hits, two runs and striking out six hitters.

The Tigers April 3 game with Holtville High School was rained out.

 

Thorsby High School

After the Rebels’ March 28 game against LAMP High School, and its April 3 game against Isabella High School were canceled, Thorsby did get its April 1 matchup with B.B. Comer High School in. The Rebels won 8-2 and were led by Gavin Parker and Remington Taylor on the mound combining for seven innings, three hits, two runs (both unearned) and striking out eight hitters. Taylor earned four walks at the plate.

Thorsby took a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but Comer tied the game in the top of the third inning. From there, the Rebels scored in each inning in route to the win.

Payton Cole and J.T. Green each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and the Thorsby two through six hitters each had an RBI.

 

Jemison High School

The Panthers finished up their spring break tournament at Oxford High School on March 28 with two games. The first, an 11-1 loss to Deshler High School, saw Tucker Bean collect Jemison’s lone RBI in the third inning. Lane Pate and Alex Bice had the other two hits for the Panthers.

Calera High School got the best of Jemison in the second game 7-2. After Calera took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Panthers took it in the bottom half of the inning behind a Guyton Pace RBI single and wild pitch to go up 2-1. Calera scored six runs the rest of the way to clinch the game.

Pace led the way going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. London Colton, Bean and Bice all collected singles in the game. Trenton Gaines threw three innings and gave up two hits, two runs (both unearned) and struck out three hitters to close the game for Jemison.

 

Billingsley High School

The Bears made an appearance in the most recent Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 1A baseball rankings coming in at No. 2. Billingsley made a statement on March 30 hosting Autaugaville High School for a doubleheader. The Bears outscored their AHSAA Class 1A Area 6 rivals 42-0 in the two games, and outhit them 28-0.

Billingsley now sits at 11-1 overall this season and 3-0 in area play.
