Some residents of Jemison have a new high-speed internet option now that Alabama Lightwave has brought its system online.

Josh Lambert of Alabama Lightwave said the internet network is a line of site system, so those who can see the downtown Jemison water tower from their house are definitely in the service area. Many who cannot see the water tower may also be able to get service.

The company plans to expand coverage in the area through signal repeaters. Lambert said locations for repeaters will be determined based on a waitlist.

On Nov. 7 2022, the Jemison City Council approved authorizing Mayor Eddie Reed to sign a three-year franchise agreement with the company to allow its high-speed wireless internet poles to be placed in the road right-of-way.

According to an Alabama Lightwave press release, “The newly launched Jemison network can deliver impressive speeds ranging from 25mbps up to 1gbps with no throttling, censorship of content, hidden fees, or data caps. Users will enjoy an optimized low-latency connection perfect for streaming, social media, video gaming, and other bandwidth intensive situations.”

Wireless signal polls are used to project the signal to a receiver on a person’s house, which sends the signal to small routers within customers’ homes, to provide high speed internet.

The company had initially established in Centreville and Brent, and it is the internet service provider for the Bibb County 911 Board, Sheriff’s Office, police department and the courts. For each system, Alabama Lightwave is tied into and purchases service from a different long-haul fiber provider. Plans are in the works to connect the two air fiber systems to create a backup for each of the systems and provide continuous service.
