Clanton Elementary School student Itzayanna Hernandez placed third in the Alabama Art Education Association’s virtual art contest for the preschool through second grade division.

Itzayanna said she was happy that she placed in the contest.

The first grade student said she used a sharpie to draw a turkey, then painted it with watercolors. The piece was one she had completed in class.

“First, we did the light colors like yellow and orange, and … I decided that I like to put some dark and light (blue),” Itzayanna said.

She said the most difficult part was drawing the turkey.

CES Art teacher Julie Harrison had asked Itzayanna if she wanted to enter the painting in the contest. Itzayanna said yes.

Going into the contest, Itzayanna thought the painting was good and would do well.

“My favorite part was the sky,” Itzayanna said about her painting.

The contest was open to preschool to 12th grade students in Alabama, and it received 150 entries, Harrison said. A photo of each entry was sent to the contest. Copies of the winning entries will be on display at the National Art Education Association Conference.
