Chilton County High School’s Latavion Floyd is this year’s The Clanton Advertiser’s basketball player of the year after averaging a double-double and nearly four blocks per game in his final year for the Tigers.

Floyd was a three-year starter for the Tigers, but his biggest jump in production came from his junior to senior seasons.

“Latavion had probably his most improvement from his junior year to his senior year,” Moncus said. “He bought into what we were telling him, and he has every tangible thing you could want. He really bought in.”

Floyd, a towering center, dominated the paint and by the rim for CCHS last season grabbing 10.6 rebounds per game and blocking 3.2 shots per game. The senior posted an 11.4 points per game average that was second on a CCHS team that had a Class 6A and 7A heavy schedule in 2022-2023.

However, Floyd’s performances in the AHSAA Class 6A state playoffs set himself apart from the pack.

On Feb. 14, CCHS traveled to Helena High School for a first-round game that saw Floyd post 12 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting and grab 12 rebounds, seven of those on the offensive end. He added four blocks in the Tigers 63-52 win.

In the Sweet 16 on Feb. 16 against Hillcrest High School, Floyd shined again with 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting and pulling down eight rebounds. Moncus said Floyd was asking for the ball down the stretch, and he made it count helping the Tigers come back and force overtime.

“He had two of his best games here in the playoffs this year,” Moncus said. “There was a point in the Sweet 16 game where we were playing through him. He kept us in the game for a long time, and I think that is a defining moment in his career.”

Moncus said Floyd did a good job locking in during practices this season. There was a direct correlation between Floyd having a good practice, and then having a good game.

“Once we pointed that out to him, he had good practice after good practice,” Moncus said. “Mentally, he was locked in during practice, and I think that really made a difference for him. The coaching staff really invested (time) into him, and he took it. We are really proud of him, and we are thankful for everything he has done for the program.”

Floyd was able to fight through adversity to finish his career at CCHS with a statement.
