The Thorsby City Council discussed closing a portion of Dakota Road to allow Thorsby High School to begin the process of building its own softball field and facilities at its March 6 meeting. Thorsby High School sent a letter to the council requesting them to close Dakota Road from Jones Street to Jenkins Street, the portion that runs between the THS football and baseball fields.

THS wants to build a softball field, concession stands, ADA compliant restrooms and other amenities that will bring all of the field together in one central place. A motion for Mayor Robert Hight to begin discussions with the city attorney to close the road was passed unanimously.

The new windows at the new Thorsby City Hall will be complete this week and the process of moving everything over to the new building is about to begin. Also, the new garbage truck is expected to be in this week, and it will go into service next week.

An agreement was reached between the council and Todd Bowen for the lot behind Red Zone Sports Grill on Montgomery Avenue, and documentation prepared with the city attorney. The council agreed to sell the lot to Bowen, but he will not receive the deed until the lot is paved. Bowen agreed to the terms, and the council approved it unanimously.

A motion to amend the employee handbook to add an ordinance that states “the handbook does not constitute in any way a contract with an employee” was proposed. There have been other municipalities in Alabama who have had issues with that ordinance not being in the handbook. The council approved adding the ordinance unanimously.

The second annual Chilton County Strawberry Festival in Thorsby will be on April 29.
