From CES
During the winter months, Julie Harrison, veteran art teacher, recruited adult members of the community to make art to share with the children at Clanton Elementary School. Large textured posters and some supplies were provided to each participant. Social media proved to be the best way of getting the word out for participation.
“I was looking for connections,” Harrison said. “Connections with a teacher that may have a family business, a student that has a parent who works in a local business, or an employee or friend of a local business that wants to share what they provide in our town. My goal was to have at least 59 businesses participate (one for each homeroom I teach), and we exceeded that goal with 61 businesses.”
These pieces of art were hand-made storefronts, created out of a variety of media including paint, chalk, crayon, oil pastel, and collage on poster art boards. Some were created by teachers, some were created by business owners, and some were created by a friend or family member. The display hung on the main hallways of CES for the months of December through February for everyone to enjoy. An Art Show was made available for those that created the art to come and see all of them in person on January 19-20. Judging was held and winners were announced for their creativity. Winners received a certificate, ribbon, and their photo in the yearbook. MayMay Made It was the Overall Winner. Category winners included Tilley’s Massage Therapy for Best Painting, Connell’s Pest Control for Best Collage, McKinney & Lively, PC for Most Realistic, Cox Veterinary Hospital for Best Color, Chilton County High School for Best Landscape, Martin Funeral Home for Best Drawing.
“I wanted students to see that we can all come together for a purpose. Art helps us connect the world we live in. By showing students each of the storefronts, they made connections. Some of them said, ‘My mama works there’ or ‘I can go there when I need help.’ I led the students in creating their own storefronts during art class using paint sticks and markers so that they could be a part of the whole project,” Harrison said.
