Severe weather expected for Chilton County Thursday

UPDATE: An updated projection from the National Weather Service has added the majority of Chilton County to the enhanced risk category.

The National Weather Service in Birmingham has included Chilton County in a multi-county hazardous weather outlook for Wednesday night and Thursday.

Current information has an enhanced likelihood storms expected to reach western and northern Chilton County, including Maplesville, Jemison and Thorsby, around 7 p.m. on Thursday. The westernmost portion of the county could see sever weather prior to this.

Enhanced risk means damaging winds up to 70 mph and tornadoes are possible as well as quarter size hail. The National Weather Service has also stated that heavy rainfall could cause localized flooding.

“Everyone needs to stay weather aware, and make sure you have your severe weather plan ready to go if a warning is issued for your location,” National Weather Service in Birmingham stated in a post on its social media page.

One way to receive weather local weather alerts is through the Chilton County 911 app.

A severe weather plan needs to include knowing where to go if the weather gets bad. A basement or interior room of a traditionally built house or building is the safest place in a tornado.

Anyone living in a mobile home or trailer should seek alternate shelter in the basement or interior room of a building or one of the county’s storm shelters.
