“Celebrating Our Own Black History Makers” will celebrate those who have made a difference in their community on Feb. 19 at 4:30 p.m.

This year’s event will be held at the Jemison Municipal Complex.

The event began as a way for the West End Neighborhood Watch Children & Youth Department to honor Chilton County’s Black History Makers and inspire young people.

Coordinator Francine Lewis said the event will “honor different Black individuals in Chilton County … that have been trailblazers for upcoming youth, so they can see history being made by African-Americans in their own county.”

Lewis said more areas of the county will be represented this year.

The West End Neighborhood Watch Person of the Year Award, formerly called the Gussie Saxon award, will also be presented to someone who has specifically impacted the West End community.

The memory of two West End Neighborhood Watch members who passed away last year will also be honored.

Young people will be a major part of the celebration as they present the honorees and perform dances and songs.

A meal will also be served as a part of the festivities.

This event is free, but tickets are required because of limited seating. Sponsorship opportunities are still available by purchasing an ad in the event program. Those interested in being a sponsor or securing a ticket can contact Lewis at 765-243-1128 or ladyfaithful73@yahoo.com.
