The Chilton County Commission took the next steps to paving County Road 182 in northern Chilton County at its meeting on Jan. 24. The $275,000 project will pave about a one-mile stretch of CR 182 from CR 145 to CR 759.

The Commission is applying for a $250,000 grant to assist with funds to pave the road. A motion to move forward with the project contingent upon the approval of the grant was passed unanimously.

The commission put together a committee to interview potential candidates for the open Chilton County engineer position. The committee will interview the candidates throughout this week. A special called meeting was scheduled for Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. in the commission room at the courthouse if a, or multiple, suitable candidates are chosen from the interview process. A new county engineer will then be named at the meeting from the suitable candidates. If there are no suitable candidates chosen by the committee, the special called meeting will be canceled.

The commission offered thoughts and prayers for Commission Chairman Jimmie Hardee in his recovery from heart surgery on Jan. 13. Hardee was released from the hospital on Jan. 18 and is back home recovering with family. Hardee thanked the community through his Facebook page for the countless texts, calls and well wishes he has received over the past few weeks.

Also, at the meeting, the Commission:

• Approved Ashley Gargus and Kent Ott as full-time deputy sheriffs at the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office.
• Approved painting the new circuit judge office and to surplus a vehicle at Minooka Park.
