A rate increase for garbage pickup is expected for the city of Jemison by Republic Services, the company that the city has contracted with to pick up garbage, in April. On Jan. 17, the Jemison City Council approved increasing the cost to residents by the increase in cost Republic is charging the city. City Clerk Vicki Potts gave the example of if Republic increased cost by 40 cents than the Jemison residential rate would go up by 40 cents in April.

“We have not increased our rates for many years,” Potts said.

An increase for front load dumpster customers was approved to take effect immediately, and then increase yearly based on the Republic Services’ increase in price to the city. Potts explained that the front load dumpster fee is what Republic Services charges the city, plus a $5 administration fee.

Also during the meeting, the council received a petition signed by each of the residents of Cobb Drive asking that speed bumps be installed. A motion to approve the installation was unanimous.

The council also approved some reserve officers for the police department
