The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a Chilton County High School student in a shooting incident on Oct. 26 near the river on County Road 28.

The student has been identified as Bryan Scarbrough.

Whether the shooting, which took place shortly after noon, was an accident or not is unknown at this time, according to Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon.

“We know who the shooter is, and (he) is in custody on unrelated charges at this time,” Shearon said.

An autopsy will be done on the victim’s body as a part of the ongoing investigation.

Grief counseling will be offered to CCHS students who have been impacted by Scarbrough’s death, CCHS principal Ron Pinson said on the school’s Facebook page.

“There are no words that can express to the family how sorry we are, and we send our most sincere condolences,” Pinson said.

Those with any information related to the incident that could be helpful in the investigation are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 205-755-4698 or on the tip line at 205-755-7898 or through the CCSO app.

Deputy Jennifer Bland is leading the investigation.
