Clanton is one step closer to a having a fire station staffed full-time following the approval of job descriptions for the positions.

The Clanton City Council unanimously approved the job descriptions in the Oct. 24 meeting. Council member Mary Mell Smith was absent.

Fire Chief David Driver had included funding for the positions in his budget for the coming fiscal year.

A $3,000 donation to the City of Clanton Arts Council was approved to be passed on to David Gentry to produce the first chapter of the horror-comedy “Fall Boy.” Council member Billy Singleton abstained from the vote because he is on the arts council board.

Gentry had presented a request for investment in the film at its Oct. 20 work session.

“That first chapter would serve as a proof of concept for the rest of the film and serve as the litmus test for the quality of the production that we want to make,” Gentry said.

He said the funds would cover the cost of hiring a trained cinematographer ($1,000), camera fee ($300), lighting ($200), microphones and other equipment ($500), paying lead actors ($600) and paying support people ($400).

Additional funding is being pursued to pay for the other chapters of the film.

A rezoning request for 1001 Bradberry Lane was approved, after the council voted to suspend the rules and allow the rezoning request to be voted on in the same meeting as the first reading. The property will be rezoned from B-2 General Business District to R-1 Single Family Residential District. During the public hearing, property owner April Godwin said she had a contract to sell the property as residential. No one spoke against the rezoning.

The council also approved:

  • A lease renewal with Gibson Timber. The company is renting property from the city.
  • Applying for a Community Development Block Grant to remove abandoned structures.
  • Purchasing a vehicle from the state bid list.
  • A $2 fee per night per room for hotels and campgrounds.
