Hundreds of hungry Chilton County residents filed into Senior Connection on Oct. 17 for the 2022 Taste of Chilton County. Tables full of Chilton County area food staples lined the building offering their best dishes hoping to earn the most votes, and be crowned the best overall, sweet or savory establishment.

Country Too Lane Catering received the most votes as the Best Overall category winner for the second consecutive year. Country Too Lane served a variety of foods at their table that included a tossed salad, chicken salad, spinach dip, cheese balls, sliders and different types of desserts.

“We love doing it, and setting up and showing people what we do for a living in how we decorate and the food we have,” Barbara Minor, owner of Country Too Lane Catering, said. “We have been a part of it since it began the first year, and we love it every year.”

In the Best Sweet category, GeMa’s Cupcakes Plus was voted best sweet table for the second-straight year as well. GeMa’s provided a variety of their signature desserts and introduced some new items they are featuring in the fall such as the sweet potato soufflé, a carrot cake and pecan pie, which owner of GeMa’s Lillian Rogers said was the biggest hit of the evening.

“It means a whole lot to us. We were able to earn that again, and we want to stay on that course,” Rogers said. “We ask God for ideas, and then we follow through with those ideas.”

In the Best Savory category, Heard’s BBQ & Soul Food received the most votes by way of their Brunswick stew. Heard’s owner Roman Heard was on hand at the event to serve his stew to attendees, and he said the stew is seasonal and “when the weather lets us to do it we sell a lot of it, and the people love it.”

“It was a shock for me. Once we tasted everyone’s stuff that was there I did not know how we would do,” Heard said. “It is great news for us, and more so to grow our business and get our name out there. We had a lot of friends there who had some great food as well, so it is pretty good to be considered the best of that.”

All ticket sales go towards both the Senior Connection and The Rotary Club of Chilton County, which donate their shares to nonprofit organizations in Chilton County.
