The Thorsby City Council approved purchasing a dog kennel that will be used for runaway dogs in the Thorsby community at their meeting on Oct. 17. Thorsby Police Officer Keith Avery mentioned to the city council at the Oct. 3 meeting that the Thorsby Police Department was looking into the idea for the kennel.

Avery explained the kennel will be used for lost dogs who are found with a collar, or look like they belong to someone local. Also, after a potential police incident, TPD will transport a dog that is left on the scene to the kennel as opposed to the Humane Society of Chilton County to give family members a chance to come and get the dog for a small fee. This will help eliminate taking dogs to the Humane Society, which is overstocked with animals at the moment. The fee is for food and water for the dog.

The dogs will be held in the kennel for a few days and posted on Facebook, and TPD will ask around the community to see who it belongs to. Avery said he will take care of feeding and giving water to the dogs. The council was excited at the idea at the Oct. 3 meeting, and they approved the purchase of the kennel unanimously on Oct. 17.

The council approved the purchase of the rest of the radio read water meters for the Thorsby community unanimously. The $40,620.45 purchase is being paid out of the city’s American Rescue Plan Act monies, and it will allow for water meter readers to read meters from the street. The purchase outfits the entire city of Thorsby with radio read water meters.
