Chilton County High School found tough sledding against Benjamin Russell High School on Sept. 29 falling 48-0 in the AHSAA Class 6A Region 3 matchup. After a 2-0 start, CCHS has dropped four of its last five games, and all four loses have come to region foes. The Tigers are still looking for that elusive region win after moving to class 6A before the 2020 season.

“The most important thing is working on things we need to improve on, and building upon things we were successful on,” CCHS coach Marvin Morton said. “It is all about laying the foundation, and keep showing up and keep going to work, and if we want to get better at what we do we have to keep working hard at it.”

Justin Godwin recovered a fumble for the Tigers to stall out a Benjamin Russell drive in the first quarter, and the CCHS defense kept the opposing offense tame throughout the first frame and trailed 7-0 at the first break. Benjamin Russell added two touchdowns in the second quarter to stretch their advantage to 21-0 at halftime.

The Tigers offense could not build any momentum against the stout Benjamin Russell defense, and the CCHS defense was on the field a large portion of the game leading to fatigue.

“We had plays that would set us back on, and that played a big role in not getting the momentum going on offense,” Morton said. “We had a few breaks that did not go our way, and that makes a difference.”

Chilton County will have two more opportunities to get their first class 6A win since joining two seasons ago. The first comes in the Tigers next region matchup on Oct. 6 against Homewood High School at 7 p.m.
