Several students arrived at Verbena High School early on Sept. 28 to participate in the annual See You at the Pole event on the football field.

A special guest this year was 1987 VHS alumnus Fred Gentry, who helped lead the group in “In Jesus Name (God of Possible)” by Katy Nichole.

Students in the Fellowship of Christian Students club at the school formed a choir and a team of students signing to the song for the event.

Club officers President Shannon Hargrove, vice president Jeremiah White, secretary Kourtney Benson and treasurer Samantha Foshee read scripture verses and gave comments.

Hargrove recounted the history of the See You at the Pole event.

“In 1990, a group of teenagers came together in Burlington, Texas for a Disciple Now weekend, moved by God and compelled to pray, they went to school flagpoles and prayed for their friends, school and leaders,” Hargrove said.

The idea spread and “on Sept. 12, 1990, more than 35,000 students met at school flagpoles” starting the annual See You at the Pole observance, which has now grown to include student events across the country and around the world, Hargrove said.

FCS Sponsor Angela Owen gave a short devotional about the need for students to be passionate about their love for God and having an abundant life through God.

“Life with Jesus does not have to be dull,” Owen said. “It does not have to be boring. You can have fun.”

Owen also emphasized that students could come to God no matter what was going on because he cared about them.

Owen closed the event with prayer for the students, their families and the community.

Students in attendance enjoyed breakfast provided by Verbena Methodist Church before the event.
