The Relay for Life Queens are gearing up for Halloween by collecting new, fun costumes for children being treated at Children’s of Alabama.

Donations will go to children, youth and teens who are being treated for cancer as well as other patients. Children’s of Alabama is the closest cancer treatment center for children.

Relay Queen coordinator Sunny Mays said the hospital provides a costume store in the hospital and trick or treating opportunities for children who are well enough to walk around. Costumes are taken to those who are not well enough to pick out a costume.

No scary or used costumes will be accepted.

Mays said a variety of sizes are needed from infant to teen.

“This is our second year,” Mays said. “They were so excited the first year we did it.”

Collection will begin Sept. 19 and go through Oct. 14. Donations can be dropped off at Exit Royal Realty, 619 Second Ave. N in Clanton from 9a.m. to 4 p.m. or given to any of the Relay for Life Queens.

“It is a way for our community to help families with children … at Children’s hospital,” Mays said. “I am sure there are a lot in the community that have used Children’s hospital.”

For more information or to coordinate an alternate drop-off option, contact Mays at 205-296-2945 or on the “Miss Relay For Life Pageant of Chilton County, Alabama” Facebook page.

Mays said the project is a good way for the Relay Queens “to give back to kids and to families that are struggling” and see “how blessed they are … I always want them to see that they are serving.”

Mays said the community has always been supportive of the Relay Queens supply drives, and they are thankful.
