The Jemison City Council unanimously approved a moratorium on car washes in the town center commercial district during its Aug. 15 meeting.

Car washes will be prohibited in the zone until 2026.

The resolution stated that the moratorium was being put in place to protect the look of the district.

“Car washes, or the abundance thereof, could be detrimental to the overall concept of the town center commercial district,” the resolution states. “… The Council desires to evaluate the role such businesses would play in the overall scope of the town center commercial district.”

Car washes that received approval through a building permit or business license prior to the vote will be allowed to continue.

Also, during the meeting, the council approved its annual transportation plan stating its intentions for using the $31,450 it expects to receive from the Rebuild Alabama Act gas tax increase.

The plan states that the funding will be used toward the maintenance of portions of County Road 71, County Road 231 and County Road 44.

City administrator Shannon Welch said the funding would likely only be enough to pave about a sixth of a mile of one road.

The resolution is available at city hall and will be posted on the city website.
