Holy Destiny will present a singing to benefit the American Cancer Society on Aug. 13. at First Baptist Church in Clanton at 6 p.m.

Organizer Kimberly Williams attends First Baptist and is a part of the American Cancer Society.

“Every single Sunday, when we are in Sunday School, we are always praying for someone with cancer,” Williams said. “There are so many people within our own congregation that have cancer.”

She hopes the event is a time for the community to come together.

The event is free admission, but donations to the American Cancer Society in the form of cash or checks to the organization will be accepted.

Luminarias will also be for sale for $2 each or 3 for $5.

“It is a need in our community,” Williams said. “It is a need for us to come together to honor those that are survivors and … currently battling the disease and also the opportunity to give individuals a time of remembrance. I am very excited about the event.”

ACS supports those diagnosed with cancer during their recovery, funds research and provides awareness materials.

“We are just looking forward to a great night,” group member Stanley Adams said.

Holy Destiny has supported ACS through the Chilton County Relay for Life event in the past.

“We enjoy helping other people,” Adams said. “Our dad has battled cancer, and several family members have battled cancer. We just feel like if we can help in any way then that’s what we want to do.”

The group also lost member Jeff Lanier to brain cancer in 2021.

In addition to raising funds for the American Cancer Society, cancer screening information will also be passed out at the event.

“There are opportunities to stay ahead of cancer,” Williams said. “… Cancer screenings have absolutely saved lives.”

Holy Destiny does four or five benefit concerts a year as community needs they can help with arise, such as raising money for medical bills or recovering from a fire.
