The Clanton City Council listened to requests to rezone two pieces of property in Clanton at their meeting on July 25. A public hearing was held to listen to the two requests.

First in ordinance 2022-18, Royce Ellison requested that the land he owns on Cooedy Road be rezoned from agriculture district to M1 light industrial district.

“We as owners would like to change it to the M1 … And develop it as a property that would be, I think, useful for the city,” Ellison said.

In ordinance 2022-19, Jeffery Bennett requested the land he owns on Center Avenue be rezoned from R3 multi-family residential district to B2 general business district.

Both ordinances were read at the meeting and voting will be at the Aug. 8 meeting.

The council approved ordinance 2022-15 that repeals and replaces language that establishes sanctioned special events in Clanton. The changes add the fee for having firefighters onsite for first aid at events held outside of the established special event days.

The council also approved ordinance 2022-16 that authorized changes and improvements to certain city streets and intersections. Both ordinances passed unanimously.

The council approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the state of Alabama and Alabama Power Company for the installation, operation and maintenance of roadway lighting.

Council members Awlahjaday Agee, Don Driver and Billy Singleton voted yes, while Wade Watley abstained from voting. Mayor Jeff Mims and council member Mary Mell Smith were both absent from the meeting.

The council approved a resolution to adopt the city of Clanton’s public safety ride along program agreement. This program will allow students who are interested in the field of first responders to ride with the Clanton Police and Fire departments to learn more about the job. The program was approved unanimously.

The city adopted the Clanton Parks and Recreations standard operating procedures and approved an agreement with Clanton Youth Baseball to use the parks and recreation facilities. The CYB does meet the requirements for the parks and recreation department standard operating procedures, and they must clean up after events. Both resolutions were approved unanimously.

The council approved unanimously a one-time donation to the Chilton County High School FFA program to help their horse evaluation team travel to the national tournament.
