The Clanton City Council is set to consider prohibiting new billboard construction for one year.

During a July work session, Mayor Jeff Mims said this moratorium would give the city time to develop a plan for appropriate locations to allow new billboards in the future.

Something similar had been done previously to set specific building zones where new wrecker services would be permitted.

Mims said he wants to keep new billboards off of Highway 31 and away from the property jointly owned by the city and county on Highway 145. Mims would like to keep billboards closer to the interstate.

Any existing billboards would not be impacted, if a zone requirement is set for billboards in the future.

A vote is expected on this change at the July 11 voting session of the Clanton City Council.

Also during the July 11 meeting, the council will hear public comments and likely vote on abandoning an alleyway in the Rockett Addition subdivision.

City clerk Jonathan Seale said the alley had never been developed.

Director of Utilities Stanley Higgins confirmed that the city did not have any utilities on the property.

Also during the meeting, the council will receive updates on this STEP program and the Community Development Block Grant project that demolished blight dilapidated houses in the city.

A vote on increasing the property rezoning fee is also expected.

An amendment to the ordinance stating the cost for having police presence at events when off-duty officers are required will also be considered. The ordinance would set the cost for having Clanton Fire Department personnel present for possible first aid needs.

The Council went into executive session at the conclusion of the work session to discuss the potential future purchase of land.

The July 11 meeting of the Clanton City Council will be at Clanton City Hall at 5 p.m.
