The Humane Society of Chilton County is looking for some community members to donate time to the animal shelter and the animals it serves.

“We desperately need volunteers,” board president Tracie Robitaille said at a July 5 meeting.

Volunteers are needed to walk dogs and play with the cats, take photos of the animals and help at events.

Events include fundraisers, such as a bingo night being planned for the fall, having a booth at community events and adoption events.

Robitaille said the nonprofit is also open to ideas of other ways people might like to volunteer.

Those interested in becoming a volunteer can contact the shelter at chiltonhumane@gmail.com

or through the Humane Society of Chilton County Facebook page.

Also, during the meeting, the Humane Society board voted to extend its summer adoption event to allow adult cats to be adopted for $10 and adult dogs at $75 through the end of July.

“They are all pretty much spayed and neutered, so we aren’t going to lose any money on that,” Robitaille said.

In June, “we were actually able to adopt out 13 dogs and 14 cats” through the discounts, shelter director Jennifer Fesmire said.

“So, it was very beneficial for the dogs, the adult dogs especially,” she said.

This is compared to 68 dogs and 32 cats that came into the shelter as strays or because their former owner brought them in.

There were 54 dogs and 8 cats taken to rescue organizations during that same month.
