Skye Apothecary growing all-natural community

Every once in a while, someone needs a different way to feel better. The same routine becomes monotonous, and refresh for someone may be in order. That is where the spiritual and metaphysical shop of Skye Apothecary comes in.
Skye Apothecary is a shop that houses many items to help one heal, achieve balance and overall feel better.
“We are a spiritual metaphysical shop, so we wanted to bring a deeper view of spirituality to the community,” owner Rebekah Nevins said. “We are very earth-based and all natural.”
Skye Apothecary opened on June 19 last year and offers herbs, crystals, classes and other items to help individuals achieve the best balance for their life.
Nevins grew up on a farm with her grandparents, and the family grew their own food, and relied on the earth for their nourishment. That is what sparked an interest for Nevins.
“I have always had a love for growing things and all-natural stuff like remedies,” Nevins said.
Nevins was a medical student at UAB before taking an alternative route to the field she is in now.
“I started getting deeper into a class, and I realized that the companies that make heart medications they also have stock that make weed killer,” Nevins said. “When I realized that you are killing natural plants that you are calling weeds that can actually help heart conditions and other things I was like, ‘Wait a minute, let me take this in a different direction.’”
Nevins is now five modules away from becoming a certified herbalist, and she plans to develop all-natural alternatives to various pharmaceuticals like salves for cuts. Recently, she has released new all-natural bug spray and after-sun spray.
“I took my medicine stuff, and decided to go the all-natural route to help people,” Nevins said.
Nevins said those interested in getting involved in a more all-natural lifestyle should start with teas.
Skye Apothecary has Reiki Master Sharon Russell come by multiple times a week to conduct Reiki sessions and teach a chakra class.
Reiki is based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch to promote healing according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. The chakra class helps individuals find balance between seven different spiritual centers in the human body. The seven chakras begin at the head, and go directly down the center of the body to the midsection.
“Part of what I do in a Reiki session is I clean off all the stagnant and negative energy off the body, and I cut any cords laying around from people you come in contact with,” Russell said. “Then, I balance out the Chakras, and I do a basic alignment. I could go deeper and do major healing on a Chakra, but you need to be prepared for that because there is a lot of emotional stuff that comes up when you do that.”
The class is also geared toward teaching people what they can do at home to stay in balance in between coming to see Russell.
Russell said she has always been a healer and interested in making people feel better. She got into massage therapy and how massage helps with maintaining balance in the Chakras. She went to massage therapy school where she was introduced to Reiki through that.
“I was very lucky with my teachers because not every massage school teaches about the energy work,” Russell said.
Skye Apothecary offers tarot card readings by appointment done by Doug Ward. Ward also does guided meditation sessions, and is currently teaching an anxiety class to help individuals cope with their worries through meditation.
“One of the things we are very much about here is helping you balance and heal your mind, body and spirit,” Russell said. “Because all three is how you become a whole and well person.”
Skye Apothecary will host a Summer Solstice Celebration event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on June 18 to celebrate their one-year anniversary of opening. The event will feature live music from the band “Arriving”, the Double J BBQ food truck and a few vendors on the sidewalk.
“It is an opportunity for the community and like-minded people to come together to see there are a lot of people out there who are into this type of thing,” Nevins said. “This is like a safe space for them to just hangout.”
Skye Apothecary is located at 1701 7th St. North in Clanton. They are open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and open until 8 p.m. on Thursday. All future events and class times are posted on the calendar on the Skye Apothecary Facebook page.
