The Humane Society of Chilton County’s Mother’s Day spay event was a successful one for the nonprofit organization. Fifty-four cat and 54 dog vouchers were passed out to pet owners who were eager to get in line on May 7.
“The turnout was amazing,” Jennifer Fesmire said. “They started lining up at 9 a.m. for the 11 a.m. event. It really reached out to the community.”
The Humane Society added six more dog vouchers to accommodate the large crowd. There were a few cat vouchers left over from the event and have since been given away.
The Humane Society handed out temporary vouchers, so if people do not use them before October, they can be distributed again. All of the money towards the vouchers was donated to the Humane Society.
“The community really came together to help each other, and for us to help them,” Fesmire said.
She said the main purpose of the event was to prevent unwanted pregnancies in pets, and to avoid the shelter getting up to 108 new litters in the future.
“With everything going up in price, some people just can’t add that into their budget right now,” Fesmire said. “If we can help them cut that cost, to prevent future litters then we will do that.”
A Father’s Day neuter event is being planned to provide more vouchers for the community. Those interested in sponsoring a voucher can donate through www.chiltoncountyhumanesociety.org.
The Humane Society of Chilton County is a no kill shelter and have to turn animals away when they are at capacity, but try to fit every animal that needs a home.
“We get anywhere between 1,500-2,500 animals a year here.” Fesmire said.
The Humane Society has upgraded its facility at 139 Shade Tree Drive to include a cat room for feline friends to mingle with each other and repainted walls to spice up the appearance.
“We would people to come view our shelter,” Fesmire said. “Even if they do not want to adopt, if they want to come through and see the animals, that socialization for them is huge.”
A bingo event at Hidden Meadow Vineyard in Jemison for the Humane Society will be held on June 4 at 6:30 p.m. The entry fee is $10 for 10 cards, and additional cards are $1 each. More information can be found on the Humane Society of Chilton County’s Facebook page.
