The Chilton County Relay For Life event celebrated raising funds to help those battling cancer while honoring those who have fought it.
Survivors were recognized at the start of the May 7 event at Peach Park by giving their name and the type of cancer that they had overcome.
Hannah Adams, Miss Covered Bridge from Birmingham, told her cancer story and the importance of Relay For Life
“She has become a dear friend of ours,” Sunny Mays of Chilton County Relay For Life said. “She is also a childhood cancer survivor.”
Adams was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor at 5 years old. She said the tumor was the size of a softball and was on her left kidney.
“After chemotherapy, radiation treatment and surgery, I became a cancer survivor, and I have remained cancer free for over 12 years,” Adams said. “Relay For Life has been such an integral part of my life. I first became involved at 8 years old as a Relay For Life team captain in south Florida.”
She said participating in Relay gave her the opportunity to share her story and give hope to those who have received a cancer diagnosis.
“It has become an honor and such a great privilege to now work with Gold Together For Childhood Cancer to allocate Relay For Life funds to childhood cancer because it is so underfunded,” Adams said.
She thanked everyone for attending the Relay event and supporting those that are fighting cancer.
Each cancer survivor present received a medal. In total, 13 survivors were recognized.
Entertainment, s’mores and photo opportunities in the giant purple Relay For Life chair were enjoyed by attendees before the walk through Peach Park’s garden trail lined with luminarias and the Trees of Hope.
