“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that every has.”  This quote by Margaret Mead sits on a plaque atop my desk as a daily reminder of what things can happen when people work together. The fruits that come from partnerships and collaborations are truly the best.

It’s true that Chilton County is well known for its fruit. Whether it be peaches, strawberries or watermelons, we know it will be good if it was grown here.

There are other good “fruits” coming from some of our business owners lately. The Chilton County Chamber of Commerce had the pleasure of meeting with local business owners and City of Clanton officials last week, to discuss ways they can support each other and bring more patrons to each of the businesses. The “fruit” that came from this meeting, is what is now known as the Merchants Association of Clanton, or MAC for short.

Business owners shared ideas. They shared struggles, and they agreed to work together to come up with solutions and ideas that will benefit the entire community, and promote growth and prosperity for businesses within Clanton City limits. While this association is not under the Chamber umbrella, many of these businesses are Chamber members, and their efforts are fully supported by the Chamber. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

This group has committed themselves to spur one another along, and excitement is in the air!

The definition of community is “a unified body of individuals.” If there is no unity, there is no community. These local business owners understand and value the true meaning of community, and are working hard to enhance and grow theirs. Working together is essential to success, and the success that comes from working together, will produce fruit for many years to come.

Leading the charge for this group is Maymay Helms of MayMay Made It. Crafting her way to over 325,000 YouTube subscribers and various other popular social media channels, I cannot think of anyone better to take on this role. Her heart and passion for growing the community and seeing every single business in the community thrive, is evident in everything she does. Her enthusiasm and creativity are such an amazing asset, and her excitement is contagious.

Shopping local is more than just keeping your tax dollars here, its about supporting those that support your community. Those that put real value in where we live and our quality of life. So, as always, Shop Local, Shop Small, and Love Where You Live!
