The Clanton City Council approved accepting the “lowest responsive and responsible bid” to demolish 25 condemned houses during its April 11 meeting.

Mayor Jeff Mims said the project was one the city had been working on for a while, even predating his time in office.

The demolition of the houses will be paid for through funds from a Community Development Block Grant that was secured while the late Billy Joe Driver was mayor.

Land was also the focus of two other items on the April 11 agenda as the council heard the first reading of a rezoning request and a separate annexation request.

A public hearing for the rezoning request for an undeveloped property owned by Allen and Melanie Payton on Lay Dam Road from R-2 single/two family residential district to B-1 central business district was held. No one spoke in favor or in opposition of the rezoning. A vote is expected at a later date.

The annexation request was made by Richard and Amelia Roberson for 652 County Road 41. A vote is expected at a future meeting.

The council also renewed its contracts with the Middle Area Agency on Aging and Avenu Insights and Analytics, which handles tax collection for the city.

Council members also unanimously approved renaming a yet to be developed road near Hatley’s Health Care from Earl Avenue to Wellness Center Drive. The road will be the entrance to The Wellness Group’s new location and a couple undeveloped pieces of land.
