The Chilton County High School boy’s team won the March 31 Clanton Country Club tournament with a score of 169. The Tigers beat Thompson High School and Dadeville High School who scored a 171 and a 209, respectively.

Freshman Ethan Jones led CCHS with a team-low 37 in the nine-hole contest. Sophomore Stephen Mahan shot a 38 to help the Tigers pin a low score.

“It’s been a good week, we’re playing well but still looking for some more consistency throughout,” CCHS coach Paul Dubose said. “Right now, we’re top heavy good and need more consistency from my 2-5 golfers. One tournament two will play well, then the next tournament the other two will play well.”

Mahan has been picking up his consistency for the Tigers and continues to drive his scores lower the more the season progresses.

The Tigers have a busy week ahead of them starting on April 5 at the Panther Invitational at Hampton Cover Golf Course in Huntsville. Hampton Cove is where the state tournament will be held on May 9-10. There are 120 boy and 103 girl golfers are expected to play on April 5.

CCHS will send their top five boys and girls to the tournament.

Dubose tries to schedule tournaments at the courses the golfers will see at the end of year tournaments such as Timberline Golf Course, which the Tigers have practiced at a few times this season.

Getting the opportunity to compete against quality competition, course management and a chance to learn strengths and weaknesses are also some things the golfers benefits from time on those courses.

When tournament time comes, Dubose’s message for his young golfers is simple.

“Play your game, your goal is to win your group. Don’t play outside yourself,” Dubose said. “Don’t try to do too much but be aggressive enough where you’re not hitting everything short.”

Dubose’s goal is to have CCHS at a 320 team score by the time sectionals arrive. He feels like if they can shoot that, then the Tigers could advance to the sub-state round. CCHS is sitting between a 330-335 team score at most tournaments now.

“We still have a lot of golf left, but when you look at the calendar it’s not a lot of time,” Dubose said. “I want them to enjoy playing, enjoy the moment and stay present.”

CCHS will participate in the Chilton County Tournament on April 7 along with Jemison High School, Maplesville High School, Isabella High School and Thorsby High School who will all have golfers represented in the tournament.

The schools will play 18 holes starting at 9 a.m. at the Clanton Country Club.
