Heavy rains on March 18 caused flooding in some Jemison Municipal Complex administrative offices.

Mayor Eddie Reed updated the Jemison City Council on the situation at the March 21 meeting.

He explained during unusually heavy rains, the gutter system cannot keep up. On March 18, this resulted in flooding in both the mayor’s office and the clerk’s office. Fortunately, a way to redirect the water was found before more offices were impacted.

Rainwater has also been going in between the original metal wall of the building and the brick wall facade that was added later.

“It has begun to do damage to this inside ceiling where mold has begun to appear, and this has to be repaired,” Reed said.

The maintenance department and the police department helped get the water out of the offices.

The cost of fixing the issue would put it in the category of projects that have to be bid out to find the best price. However, Reed said the city attorney is researching whether this can be declared an emergency, so that the situation can be addressed in a timelier manner.

Reed said the situation “needs our immediate attention.”

An emergency meeting may be called in the future after the attorney gives an answer on how to proceed.

The Council approved contracting with 3R Rodeo to organize the Cowboy Day on April 2 for $2,500.

Reed and the council talked about how it would be a good community event, and they hope to make it an annual event.
