The city of Clanton is moving from providing garbage service to having Amwaste pickup residential garbage starting Feb. 1.

According to information from the city, household garbage will now be picked up twice a week and taken to “RePower South in Montgomery where it will be separated and sorted to be reused for various products and fuels. All household waste and recyclables can be bagged and placed in the same garbage cart.”

Change in cost will be an increase of $5 per cart.

Garbage must be in bags, and must be by the roadside without anything blocking it.

While city employees will not be picking up household waste, they will still yard waste and rubbish collection services.

Mayor Jeff Mims and Director of Public Works Jeff Zissette stated “All Clanton Sanitation Department employees will be retained and not adversely impacted by this change.”

The change in service comes after Clanton joined the Cahaba Solid Waste Disposal Authority, who uses Amwaste for all household garbage.

Dumpster service will no longer be offered through the city, according to a letter signed by Mims and Zissette. Amwaste will serve these customers until the end of February. Individual businesses can choose Amwaste or another company for their dumpster needs moving forward.

Previously, garbage pickup had been provided by the city with city employees. Increased costs at the Chilton County Transfer Station and the landfill the trash ultimately goes to prompted multiple Clanton City Council conversations about making a change.

“Disposal fees have more than doubled within the past five years. A majority of the increases has always been absorbed by the City of Clanton,” the letter stated. “The City’s current dumpster rates are comparable to industry standards used in the early 1990s. With most dumpster service providers, there will be a significant increase compared to the City’s current rate. The City of Clanton can no longer sustain subsidizing the increases while continuing to provide the same quality of service.”
