Severe weather on Dec. 29 brought a tornado through part of the northern portion of the county near County Road 800 before 11 p.m.

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement on its Facebook page that there were no injuries, but there was damage.

CCSO, North Chilton Fire Department and Chilton County Road Department responded to the area to clear trees and clear the roadway as CCSO deputies directed drivers in the area.

Meteorologist Jason Holmes of the Nation Weather Service in Birmingham said Doppler radar indicated a tornado in the area, but how strong it was will be determined by a ground survey once it is safe for a team to investigate. Updates will be available on the organization’s Twitter and Facebook accounts.

Unfortunately, there is the potential for some more severe weather on Jan. 1.

“We just want people to be weather aware,” Holmes said.

This includes having more than one way to receive weather updates, including one that can be used if the power goes out and having cell phone emergency alerts turned on.

Storms on Jan. 1 will have the potential for heavy wind, tornadoes and hail. Chilton County is currently in the slight risk category.

Holmes said temperatures are expected to drop next week, bringing calmer weather and winter temperatures.
