Car accident with train results in one death, injuries

A passenger vehicle accident at the railroad crossing near Guy Street in Jemison has resulted in one death and several injuries. 

The Jemison Police Department released a statement on Nov. 29 that around 4:27 p.m. a vehicle had been hit by a train on the track.

“The vehicle was occupied by 2 adults and 3 kids,” according to the statement. “The 40-year-old female driver was pronounced deceased on the scene. A 24-year-old female was transported to UAB via Life Saver Helicopter. An 11-year-old female was transported to Children’s hospital via Haynes Life Flight Helicopter. A 16-year-old male and a 13-year-old female was transported to Children’s via RPS Ambulance. The extent of the injuries are unknown at this time.”

Jemison Police Chief Shane Fulmer released a statement on Nov. 30 that those who had been been transported by helicopter had internal injuries. The 11-year-old female was reported as being in “critical but stable condition.”  The 24-year-old female had surgery for internal injuries. The 13-year-old female also had internal injuries and had surgery on Nov. 30. Fulmer said the “16-year-old male was treated for lacerations and a foot fracture and some great news is, he will be home today (Nov. 30)”

Names of the deceased and the injured are not being released. However, Fulmer did say they were local to the Jemison area. 

“This is a horrible and tragic situation,” the department said in the release. “Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with everyone involved and who have been affected.”

In addition to the Jemison agencies, other agencies also responded to the scene. The department expressed its thanks for the assistance. 

This incident is an ongoing investigation by the JPD Traffic Homicide Investigators.
