Field trips return to Penton Farms

The Penton Farms pumpkin patch is back as a popular field trip spot this year.
Last year, several schools canceled their annual pumpkin search amid COVID-19 restrictions and concerns.
Rachell Penton of Penton Farms said there were only a few schools that came last year.
“We are definitely excited about seeing all of the kids come back this year,” Penton said.
Clanton Elementary School enjoyed the pumpkin patch and other farm related activities during a trip on Oct. 13.
Student Justin wanted to find a big pumpkin, while student Liam and chaperone Megan were more focused on color. Liam was looking for yellow. Megan wanted multiple colors.
Student Lily wanted to find a white one.
Penton said she also focuses on color when choosing a pumpkin.
“I like the bright colors,” she said.
There are plenty to choose from.
Penton said they have about 60 different varieties that are brought to the public field from the 50 acres of fields grown by Penton Farms.
“I enjoy watching the kids playing and having a good time, and I enjoy parents coming up and telling me that they enjoyed it and that they are glad that we have something for the community to do.”
Additional pavilion space has been added for groups to have a shady place to eat.
Visits when open to the public have also increased.
“I think everyone is just ready to get out and do something,” Penton said in light of the pandemic.
Many have been looking for flat stackable pumpkins for decoration this year.
The pumpkin patch and farm-related activities are open to the public weekdays from 1-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of October. Admission is $10. This also includes a pumpkin. The cow train is an additional cost.
For those just wanting to shop for a pumpkin, admission is free.
