The Thorsby Town Council passed a resolution to give $1,000 to the United Way of Central Alabama during its meeting on Oct. 4.

It marked the first time that Thorsby has given to United Way as a town as opposed to individuals giving to the organization.

The resolution was passed by a unanimous vote.

The council decided to give to United Way of Central Alabama following a short presentation from Claude Perry, the director of United Way of Central Alabama.

“Like I’ve told folks, I’m not asking for $10,000, I’m not asking for $5,000, I’m not even asking for $1,000,” Perry said. “I’m just asking that whatever you can, just invest in United Way of Central Alabama, invest in the town of Thorsby, and invest in each of your communities.”

Thorsby Mayor Robert Hight told the council to decide on a number they were comfortable with giving.

“It’s up to you all,” Hight said. “We can find the money.”

Council member Glenn Littleton suggested $1,000, and the rest of the council agreed to the amount.

Also discussed at the meeting was the town holding its Halloween activities on Oct. 30 instead of Oct. 31 this year. The reasoning for that is because Oct. 31 is a Sunday, and the council felt it may be best to hold its activities on a Saturday night instead.

The council also approved a resolution to update all of the town’s building codes to the 2020 version, except for electrical work, which will be updated to 2017 codes.
