Art classes for children are returning to the Chilton County Arts Council building.

Classes had been suspended since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the Arts Council needing a new location.

The classes are open to children ages 7 to 14.

The classes will meet on Mondays at the new Arts Council location 500 Fifth Avenue North in Clanton. The first class will be offered on Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. If there is enough participation, students will be divided into groups of younger and older students, which would meet at different times.

Cost for the classes is $12 per session or $45 a month if the student will be attending all four sessions.

“The idea is to fill a hole in public education,” instructor Maria Hosmer said.

While art is offered at the elementary level and some in high school, Hosmer said she was unsure if it was offered in middle school.

“The idea is to teach kids about art, visual art, about artists a little bit, not only drawing,” Hosmer said.

Painting and discussing potential careers in art-related fields with the older students are also a part of Hosmer’s plan.

She said she is looking forward to having the classes in the new location, where there is more room and opportunities for students to go outside to create art based on what they see.
