The Clanton Evening Lions Club recognized Joshua Simms as this year’s Outstanding Youth for Chilton County on Aug. 21.

“I was pretty shocked, and I felt honored to receive such an award,” Simms said.

He thanked the Lions Club for selecting him.

Simms said “the service projects that I did for CCHS (Chiton County High School) and the Eagle Scout project I did for the community” are what made him stand out to the club.

For his Eagle Scout project, Simms renovated the First United Methodist Church John and Margo Gibson Youth Center patio area.

Simms, a junior at CCHS, was a part of sprucing up the bushes and laying pine straw near the sign at the school.

Volunteering is important to Simms because it is as a way to show “you are there for your community, and you want to help out in any way you can.”

Leadership and doing well in school are also qualities that the Lions Club look for in the Outstanding Youth nominee. Simms is in leadership in Scouts and in FFA.

After he graduates from CCHS, Simms plans on attending Mississippi State and “do something in the agriculture engineering industry.”
