The Clanton City Council is set to approve projects for Rebuild Alabama Act gas tax funding during the Aug. 23 voting meeting.

Mayor Jeff Mims said during a work session on Aug. 19 that the city is required to pass a resolution stating how the funds will be used.

“This year, we are just going to say some of our paving in town (downtown),” Mims said.

Bids will be open on this project next week.

Increasing the fine for littering and dumping to $500 will also be considered. Mims said signs would be posted stating the new fine, and the city judge has already said it will be enforced if the increase is passed.

The second reading of a rezoning request by Dr. Jon Binkerd for property on Highway 145 will also be considered at the Aug. 23 meeting.

The city only received one bid for cutting grass on properties that are overgrown. The plan is to reject this bid, so that they can negotiate with the sole bidder.

“Whether we will be able to save any money or not, I don’t know but at least we would be able to have that opportunity to do it, if we reject this bid,” Mims said.

Donating to the LeCroy Career Technical Center College and Career Fair was discussed during the work session. The event has had to change locations and was requesting a donation to cover the event venue and possibly snacks for the vendors. Mims said the location rental would be $400 and the snacks for the expected 100-150 vendors would be an additional $100.

Two ordinances that will be considered for a first reading at the Sept. 13 meeting were discussed.

One ordinance would lift the moratorium on mini warehouses, giving a specific zone where they can be built.

Mims said existing mini warehouses could build more at their existing locations, but no more than what would fit on the land they have currently.

The other would set guidelines for required facades on metal buildings. Mims said a façade would be required on all sides of the building. However, those on the outskirts of Clanton could go to the variance board to apply for an exception for some of the walls. This would be on a case by case basis.

The city council voting session on Aug. 23 will be at 5 p.m. at 505 Second Ave. N in Clanton.
