Reid Mitchell, a student at Isabella High School, took part in the 84th American Legion Alabama Boys State program in July.

Mitchell joined fellow Chilton County students, Parker McCullough and Jake Moore of Chilton County High School, at the program.

American Legion Alabama Boys State is “a leadership program for young men who have completed their junior year of high school and are leaders in their schools and communities,” according to a press release.

The program takes place every year at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. It is a week-long program, and its purpose is to teach students the basic principles involved in the management of a democratic society. The program does this by putting students in governmental positions, and then they run a mock government to understand the daily procedures and issues that local, state and national governments face.

Mitchell was elected to a city government position, so he took on tasks that many local governments in the U.S. complete every day.

He participated not only with all the students invited to the program in 2021, but also the ones invited in 2020, as they could not attend due to COVID-19.
