The Clanton City Council discussed a resolution to purchase a GIS mapping software during its meeting on July 22.

The software would be used to map out the city’s roads, sewage systems and water pipes. A paving assessment will be done where pictures will be taken every 10 feet of each road, sewage system and water pipe in the city. Once those photos are taken, they will be uploaded into the software, and it can then determine what repairs are most needed in the city and what repairs can wait.

It will cost the city $149,000 to purchase the software. Should the city choose to purchase the program, the money would come from the funds recently acquired via the American Rescue Plan Act.

“What that will do is assist us in getting grant money not only for paving [roads, but] for sewer infrastructure and water infrastructure as well,” Stanley Higgins, Clanton Director of Utilities, said.

The council will vote on the resolution during its meeting on July 26.

Also discussed at the meeting was a resolution to improve the lighting at different intersections in town. To upgrade the lighting would cost the city $21,000. The city already has $4,000 saved away in a SWA account. According to Mayor Jeff Mims, the city would apply for a grant to pay off the rest, but if they are unable to acquire a grant, the rest of the funds would also come from the American Rescue Plan Act money.

The council also discussed creating new job positions in the police department and municipal court.
